🕯️ Maker Series: Phil’s Music Notes – [Horror] Intervals 👻
🎃 A pre-Halloween special exploring the dark side of sound.

At its core, music is a game of intervals — the spaces between notes that define every melody, every emotion. Even without musical training, we instinctively recognize the cheerful sound of a major chord or the melancholy of a minor. But some intervals go far beyond sad or happy… some are unnerving, unsettling, even evil.

In this pre-Halloween edition of Phil’s Music Notes, we dive into the tritone, the infamous “Devil’s Interval.” Once banned by tradition and feared for its dissonance, this interval has haunted music for centuries — from John Williams’ shark-infested tension in Jaws, to John Carpenter’s chilling Halloween theme, to the thunder of Holst’s Mars, the chaos of Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, and the heavy riffs of Black Sabbath and Metallica. 🎸

But there’s more to this sinister sound — it’s also at the heart of jazz harmony. Those lush, complex 7th chords you hear? They’re built on the same mysterious tritone. The very interval once deemed forbidden became the key to modern expression.

In this episode, we’ll explore how this interval transformed from symbol of darkness to a cornerstone of musical color — and how you can use it to bring new life (or afterlife 👀) to your own compositions.

S4 E140 This is one of the craziest videos I have ever made… (GTA5) (Aug 2024)

Crazy, it is certainly that – and more. If you enjoy slasher horror, we think you’ll love this – and its definitely not for U18s! The film is by Toaster and is a music video for Code Mistake, a deathcore metal spectacular by CORPSE and Bring Me the Horizon. We examine Toaster’s GTA5 machinima, reflect on its anime qualities, and conclude its significantly better than the official music video: Ricky discusses it in the context of Stan Brakhage’s Dog Star Man, but Phil, Tracy & Damien feel the inspiration is much closer to home.

S3 E92 Unreal Engine: Horror (August 2023)

A truly terrifying short for some, Horror is more like an absurd dream for others. The film is made by Yang Hyunjun, released 4 June 2023. Its creator showcases some incredible scene detail, especially at the beginning of the film, but thereafter, loses a little of the pathos and credibility in the storytelling.

S3 E55 Film Review: 917 by Krad Productions (Dec 2022)

In this ep, Phil leads the discussion about one of the most *disturbing films we’ve ever seen, called 917 by Krad Productions, released 30 Oct (spoiler alert: Phil designed the soundscape for it). It is disturbing that there’s a true back story to the film, which is explained – and having watched the film, we couldn’t really think of another adjective that summed it up better. Yep, its disturbing… and we are definitely none the wiser about the truth of 917, that maddening frequency that sends you off into a twirling spiral of err…… All theories welcome!

*Disturbing=anxiety inducing, worrying, upsetting; mental illness such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, addictive behaviors.

This month of Halloween, Ricky, Phil, Tracy and Damien discuss horror machinima – and is the genre of horror dead in machinima? The team also reflect on feedback from last month’s discussion on long vs short-form machinima. Finally, the team discuss the thought process for choosing a creative platform for making a new machinima. As ever, feedback on our discussion topics is very welcome!

Here’s a list of links that came up during our discussion this month –

Epic Games’ CTO (and co-founder of ILMVFX) Kim Libreri comments about the role of audience in machinima (quote from Pioneers in Machinima) –

[Tracy: What advice might you have for those new to storytelling using machinima and virtual production techniques?] Kim: Create, watch, and share. You’ll end up being in a vacuum if you don’t share your work with anybody. Learn how to use the tool and remember that it’s really important that when you are creating a story you’re making it for an audience. So, find the audience and learn from their reactions. Create a lot. Watch a lot of movies. Play a lot of video games because the game aesthetic and link to the movie aesthetic is interesting. Share what you’re making.”
